    isn't fetch_assoc supposed to grab the whole row?

    ALSO THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP EVERYTHING WORKS NOW, of course I will still need to tidy up the code fix some validation and add placeholders instead of ?, do you have skype or anything if you don't mind? Would be great to have somebody to contact if i get really stuck

    Yes, but it grabs a row of the result set of your query. If you don't select a column, it's not in the result set.
