Sure,
1. Check if a visitor has a cookie.
2. If not, issue them a new cookie, and make a new record for them in your database.
3. If they have a cookie, read it and say "welcome back!" or something corny like that :-)
With this scheme, you can then track your visitors. Everytime they come back, you up a counter or something in their record. You can also log where they came from as well.
So with this cookie, you can create all kinds of personalized content, because when a visitor comes, you know who they are from their cookie, without having to know their name.
