I have followed the instructions on installing php4 from www.faqts.com

However, when I doubleclicked my php file (named test1.php) I was prompted to select from a list of programs to open the file.
It seems that the computer cannot recognise the .php extension I put in.

    What can I do?

    regards

You either need to install a web server and call it from a browser, or call it from a DOS prompt.
