    I have a form for user post their email address:

    <form method=post action=join.php>
    <input name=email size=20>
    <input type=submit>
    </form>

    In my "join.php":

    # check the input
    if ( !isset($HTTP_POST_VARS) ) {
    echo "1";
    include("styles/join.php");
    exit;
    }

    #check the email input
    if ( !isset($HTTP_POST_VARS["email"]) ) {
    echo "2";
    include("styles/join.php");
    exit;
    }

    where I put my email address in and submit, what I get is "2".
    is isset($HTTP_POST_VARS["email"]) wrong?

    try just $email
    instead on isset you might want to try just !$email or empty($email)
