    I use mysql_connect, I've never heard of mysql_pconnect

    pconnect() reduces the overhead of creating a new connection from PHP to MySQL by using an existing connection. Of course, this only works with using PHP as a server module.

    So, if you are using PHP CGI, pconnect has no benefit.
