Probably not as well, as servlets are compiled on first access (slow - but you can configure around this) and then reside in the memory of the Java server. Whether you will even notice this difference in performance depends on the amount of traffic your site is doing, and other factors (hardware etc..)

You can use programs like the PHP Accelerator to store the compiled bytecode for each PHP script, which will save having to compile each script on each hit.

Java is programming and PHP is scripting. It always depends on the project etc..

Java development usually takes a lot longer and PHP is a rapid prototyping type of thing. But I guess Java performs a lot better when it comes to high traffic sites since the programming is a layer beneath the usual PHP mambo jumbo (no offense ).

Plattforms need to be optimized as well. The Apache-PHP and your JVM. Hardware- and software-wise. There's just a lot to think about.

Ha! Almost forgot. The main advantage of Java is the OOP. PHP4's OOP just isn't very OO. Rumour has it that PHP5 will change all that. But until then.

I have seen enterprise applications written in PHP and Java.

Do you know what type of thing you are gonna do with either one?

    Hope that helps,
    Till

See my previous post at: http://forums.devshed.com/t66966/s.html

It's annoying that this has become two separate threads. You should have posted your servlets question on the end of that thread.

What will you have on the site to get 100,000 users at once? I cannot see how that many people will be wanting to access the site at one point in time
