Is it possible to search a string with the help of wildcards?

Yes. Read the DevShed tutorial on Regular Expressions (or read Chapter 10 of my book).

PHP's regexp functions are at: http://www.php.net/manual/ref.regex.php

Regular expressions can be tricky. Be patient with them.
