Does anyone know how to download/copy a text file from a dir on the server to a dir on the C drive of the user?

Errr...You let the user download the file??? As simply as putting a link in your page and then letting them click it??

Let me restate my question -- I want to access a remote text file (FILE). I don't want FILE to be displayed on the browser. I do want FILE to be saved in a directory on the user's local machine. Do I have to user some sort of transfer protocol? Do I need to FTP? If so, can you tell me what commands to implement? Do I need to reconfigure PHP since it didn't include the extension initially? I am reluctant to do this because resetting it all is risky business to me since I was not the original installer. Can I use HTTP for it? How? Is there some easier way that I'm overlooking?
Thanks for any help.

you can not do this without user intervention or agreement, except by using activex controls which bypass the browsers inbuilt security and that is not a good thing to do for many reasons
