Interested in writing a link script, but I want to do something most auto-link scripts don't do, and that's validate the entered link.

Naturally I'm posting here, because I'm using PHP.

I know I would only be looking for a remote server response of "200" but how would we approach such a process, without directing the users browser to the URL?

Sounds as if you could probably find what you're looking for, and then some, at:
    http://phplinks.destiney.com/

"phpLinks is an open source freeware project written in PHP for use with MySQL. It allows one to run an extremely efficient pre-built, dynamically generated, Link Farm with full search capabilities. A "simulated" search engine in many ways. phpLinks counts referrers in and out for listed sites. phpLinks provides site categorization up to 5 levels deep."

"phpLinks is not derived from nor adapted from any previous work. It is not associated with any other such "Links" script. phpLinks is 100% original work outside of list serve suggestion, etc..."

It's free, and quite easy to install. It will validate URLs for you, or you can do it yourself. It also allows you to approve submissions before they're added to the link index.

    Joel,

First, let me say thanks for the info, and link.

Judging from your post, it sounds like you are a part of the project

Again, thanks, and I'll check it out.

Just took a look, at first glance, it reminds of a Perl Program from Gossamer Threads..

'Cept it's not perl. And, nope, have no connection to phplinks at all 'cept that I downloaded and installed it to see how it worked.
