I am trying to find a resource to get me started with a customer support system. I am fine with all the stuff for the database and how to work with the data once there, but here are the two issues I can't seem to figure out:
1. How can I receive e-mail directly into the database
2. How can I assign a ticket number to the messages above
Any resources or examples of this type of system in PHP would be a great help.

Have a look at phpGroupware, they have a ticketing system as part of their package.
It does a lot more than ticketing such as calender, adress book, todo list and email etc. http://www.phpgroupware.org/
