Bearing in mind that Im new to this idea as well...
If you / the client own the server, try installing QMAIL.
That was the best solution I came up with.
Either that, or you could create a PHP mail reader for the client which writes the messages into a database / file.
However, then they would have to always use their browser to check their email.
