I've been looking into creating a custom session handler that uses a database instead of cookies. The manual says that in order for this to work, I have to set session.save_handler = user in the php.ini file. My site is hosted and I doubt the people will change the php.ini file for me, because then anyone who wanted to use sessions the normal way, couldn't. Is this the only way to do it? Can I set session.save_handler at runtime? Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

I am sure it is possible to do it in a .htaccess file I think the format is for example
    php_value variablename variablevalue
    php_value session.name "PHPSESSID"
