Other - Websites with Custom Design Studio

Recently I came across websites where visitors can design custom shirts, bicycles etc. Example: http://urbike.de/singlespeed/Konfigurator-Damen.html

Is there anyone having an idea about how the design studio works? Or if it is a third party script that can be purchased and integrated into website?

building your own application is quite advanced or costly if you let someone build it. you can have something similar for free (as far as t-shirts). for instance at http://www.spreadshirt.com
there are a few in the market so make sure you check out others.

The website you linked btw, uses several images as layers and some javascript to activate colored images. This is not extremely hard to do, but does take some time. When you choose a color you in fact press a link which activates a javascript function which alters one of the image layers
