I know I'll probably get some biased responses considering this is a PHP board, but try to be open and honest as this is very important.
Someone I work with wants to use Java servlets exclusively for server-side application development. I have argued that that solution might be good for some things, but a simple HTML-embedded scripting language like PHP is a better solution for others. It seems to me that, while Java servlets have made a lot of progress in speed, efficiency and overall robustness, there is still a fair amount of overhead compared to PHP if all you want to do is extract a record from a database and display it through a browser.
Anyone more informed than me have an opinion?

If you're not in a hurry, you might look at JSP - Java Server Pages - as well. They will be included in the Apache Jakarta project. From what I understand, the spec is done, and there is a developers kit.
I'd have to agree though that at the present time, PHP is hard to beat.
