    Which of the servers below would be the best for a high traffic PHP & MySQL server.

    Sun Ultra 1
    256 mb ram
    4Gb SCSI


    dual PIII 550Mhz
    512mb ram
    4Gb SCSI


    Sun Ultra 10
    256 mb ram
    4Gb SCSI

    For high traffic sites, memory is king, followed by processor. I'm assuming you'd run Solaris on the Suns and Linux on the Intel-based PC?

    Costwise, going with the Intel-based box will save you $$ on hardware as well as OS. And PHP/MySQL are VERY at home on Linux. Linux 2.2's SMP support is quite sufficient as well.

    Then again, sometimes corporate politics would dictate going the Sun/Solaris route, so that's up to you to weigh.
