i try to
but it doesn't work. it seems that you can't use subdirectories with require(). Is there a way to do this without SSI?

if the calling file is in a separate directory under your webroot, use
<? include ("../includes/connect.php3")
require uses the same syntax, but this should get what you need

(this is probably for my own reference, but)
why don't you just give an absolute file path?
