    Could someone please tell me the meaning of the '@' operator. I often find people using it with MySQL db functions ( @mysql_select_db(...)). The php manual does not say anything about it.

    It is used to supress error reporting. for instance if you connection failed it wouldn't show an error if used @mysql_connect
