my favorite OS is Linux. Favorite language to run for web development is PHP, why? because its really fast, serves the purpose of modern web development, (unless you are doing a lot of telnet commands and apache stuff, in which case i prefer perl), and mySQl is my favorite database. mySQl is really easy, flexible and powerful. And best of all, these 3 are all free

    Just my opinion.

    What exactly is the emergency?

These choices depend on your requirements. If you are looking for massive scaleability, you SHOULD consider SUN, SGI, or Alpha. (I'm talking about if you plan on getting millions of hits per hour)

If you are talking about a fairly 'normal' website, then an Intel-based server will do fine. In this case, yes Linux is a good choice, but I think an even better one is FreeBSD. It is the most rock-solid stable server I have ever seen. It's sometimes a little harder to understand, but if you follow the documentation, there are no surprises.

Without a doubt, PHP is the best server-side web scripting language. The good thing is that it is almost completely cross-platform, not only for different operating systems, but for different webserver software also. Version 4 of PHP is so fast that dynamic web pages usually load as fast as static ones.

MySQL is a great database for non-critical data, and is perfect for most dynamic websites, but if you are doing more complicated things with your data, especially involving money, you should consider a database that has some more complete features, such as transactions. Oracle is of course the industry standard, but PostgreSQL is a good free choice, or IBM DB2, or Sybase.

For some good info on how good PHP is, go to www.zend.com, which is one of the companies behind PHP, and see the Testimonials and Case Studies.
