It's really a difficult area of PHP configuration. To create images dynamically you have two choices:
1. Use an external command-line graphics app such as ImageMagick, where you simply pass arguments to the command line, which creates the images outside of PHP.
2. Use PHP's Image Creation library, which depends on a small not-so-well documented graphics library called 'gd'. You can get it at www.boutell.com/gd . This MUST be installed in order for PHP image creation functions to work.
If you want option 2, and if your server platform is Unix/Linux, go to http://www.php.net/manual/ref.image.php and see my post near the bottom (by firstname.lastname@example.org), where I describe all the things I had to do to get gd working together with PHP. If your platform is Windows, the post right under it might have a good link for you (download.swwwing.com).
