    I have been unable to sucessfully execute this command and I wonder how I can check the version of PHP that is running on a co-located server..

    I tried mysql_selectdb() as well to no avail.

    Actually that is not a command ..that is a function for selecting the mysql database..

    you should do something like this to select the database

    <?

    $con=mysql_connect('localhost','username','password');
    //connection string

    mysql_select_db('yourdatabasename',$con);
    //select db

    echo "Database connected successfully";

    ?>

    if you want to know which version of php is using then you may try the folllowing

    <?
    echo php_info();
    ?>
