Can you post your table layout and INSERT query?
PostgreSQL, it's what's for dinner...

Yes, please post an example query and your table structure.
PostgreSQL 6.5.3 is quite outdated, so I doubt many Devshed members will be familiar with it. I have never used it. But, if this error has suddenly started happening, with no changes in your INSERT queries, then it looks to me like there might be a corruption of your pg_ catalog tables.
Do a complete dump of your database before attempting anything else, or you might lose data. Browse your logfiles for clues as to when the problem started. Probably the best thing is to then do a complete system backup before dropping your database completely and restoring from dump.
I strongly recommend you upgrade to a later version of PostgreSQL, because the performance and stability has improved greatly. You might find a few difficulties in upgrading from such an old version of PostgreSQL, though, so you might want to first upgrade to PostgreSQL 7.0.3, and then to 7.3.4, which is the latest stable version. All versions of PostgreSQL are available as source: ftp://ftp8.us.postgresql.org/pub/pgsql/source
