Help: Start server in background mode.

    Hi.
How can I start the postresql server in backgound mode. Wherever I try I get permission denied in logfile creation.

    Last time I tried the command "/usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl -D /usr/local/data -l /tmp/pgsql.log start".
    Help.

    the command "/usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl -D /usr/local/data -l /tmp/pgsql.log start"

shows you are trying to create the log message in /tmp so you could do ls -l on / and see what the permissions are for /tmp and who is the owner?? also, what user are you trying to start postgres as? maybe you could just try putting the logfile in /home/postgres or something

Thanks metaBarf. Changing the location of logfile to /home/postgres solved my problem.
