    Logging in with Passwords

As mentioned in my edit to my previous post, I'm having a problem with logging into my newly-created 'postgres' user database.

The problem is, despite setting a password using initdb:

    > initdb -W /usr/local/pgsql/data

... I can log into the database without being asked for the password for the 'postgres' user, despite what system user account I'm using to log in. Sure doesn't seem very secure.

In my personal user account, I've been able to successfully log into the postgres database account using:

    > psql -U postgres

... again, no password or anything... it just lets me on in to create tables, insert data, even create other databases.

Can anyone please explain why this is happening and what I can do to ensure that the user is ALWAYS prompted for a password when trying to log into the database?

    Thanks,

    - coredumped.
