postgresql installation help
Hey I'm new to unix and trying to get postrgresql installed. after running configure, while trying to run make, i get this in the terminal:
sh-2.05b# make make -C doc all make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'. make -C src all make -C doc all make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'. make -C src all You need to run the 'configure' program first. See the file 'INSTALL' for installation instructions. make[2]: *** [all] Error 1 make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make: *** [all] Error 2 any suggestions? thanks a lot, Mike |

1. Did you read the file called INSTALL?
2. What were the results of the "./configure" command line call? Hint: run ./configure --no-create > configure_output.txt and then read through the configure_output.txt file at your leisure. It will tell you what the configure program encountered as it tried to set up PostgreSQL for your system (the --no-create option just makes it a test run, without actually changing any files). 3. What Unix system are you using? Linux? FreeBSD? Other? 4. If this is a Linux or FreeBSD system, you might try to run "gmake" instead of "make". This is the GNU version of the make utility, and sometimes provides better output, as well as more informative error messages. If you really want to see error messages, run it as "gmake -d" for full debugging output.

It looks like there are a few problems getting PostgreSQL to compile properly on OS X 10.3, as we can see from this mailling list message. I don't have the time right now, but if you read through all the follow-ups to that list message, you might find the solution.
(On closer reading, it looks like part of the problem might be that there is already an older version of PostgreSQL shipped on 10.3 and the older version of libpq is in the way. You might need to figure out how to uninstall PostgreSQL before installing with a fresh compile. Another possibility might be to use custom path prefixes for the PostgreSQL libraries in your ./configure statement. Run "./configure --help" for more info) You might also read this link on the Apple developers website. |
