    Error - too many client ??

    Got the following error in the PostgreSQL database ... when running pg_dump...

    A similar error was received by the end-users, application tier (JBoss) also...

    pg_dump: [archiver (db)] connection to database "dev" failed: FATAL 1: Sorry, too many clients already
    Sorted it out temporarily by bouncing the database.

    Any idea how this can be sorted out ?

    Thanks for your input.

    Regards.

    Well, it seems simple to me: if you have too many clients you need to raise the maximum number of connections in the postgresql.conf file. On a standard install, it defaults to 32 clients max, but on most modern servers PostgreSQL can handle many more connections.

    See:

    http://www.postgresql.org/idocs/index.php?runtime.html

    http://www.ca.postgresql.org/docs/mo...w_performance/

    http://www.argudo.org/postgresql/soft-tuning.html
    The real n-tier system:

    FreeBSD -> PostgreSQL -> [any_language] -> Apache -> Mozilla/XUL
