16 bit vs 32 bit multi-tasking
I think you hit the nail on the head for your own problem. You 'got a[n] old book'! Get a new book! Seriously, unless you are working on programming for the bad old world of DOS (all Win 3.1 is is a pretty face on ugly DOS), you will not be learning anything that is useful for Win9X, WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, etc. These all are built on the Win32 API and if your book is too old for that then it is likely useless except for archaeological purposes. If I recall properly, DOS programming didn't even fully support ANSI C.

It is MS Visual Studio .NET 2003 (latest edition) sort of v7.1. The SDK (software Developers Kit) comes included or can be downloaded from MSDN (approx 700Mb). June 2003 is latest (I believe). It will is the help and library (+ DLL) files.
The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the Tree of Knowledge. The subtext is, All the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just kept your f***ing mouth shut and hadn't asked any questions.
