Open source C compiler
What is currently the best open source C compiler to pick up for game programming?
I would like my games to be work on all desktop platforms.

I'd vote for gcc, the gnu compiler collection. In part because it's the only one I know of, but also it's good. There was a time Hewlett Packard admitted that the gcc optimizer produced faster code than did their commercial compiler.
[/code] are essential for python code and Makefiles!

Increasingly clang/LLVM is being used as an alternative to GCC.
Working across development platforms has more to do with selecting appropriate cross-platform libraries than it does which compiler you use. So long as the libraries you choose are available or can be built for a specific compiler the compiler itself need not be cross-platform so long as compiler specific extensions are avoided or conditionally selected on build.
