Take heed
I would counsel any north american company or individual to think twice before giving work to these cutrate groups in Russia, Ukraine, India, etc.,. The old adage "you get what you pay for" is especially true here. There are many very smart coders working in these outfits, but overall their methods are not robust, they have many people learning on the job and the language difficulties will give the coup de grace to your project. A very high proportion of such projects fail and must be entirely redone. If you want your job done well, pay a fair market price. Any outfit asking less than $18 USD/hr. will bring you grief, with vanishingly rare exceptions.

Hello,
At this time I'm freelance Java, DB, XML Consultant from Russia. And can say that my customers will disagree with you if they read your post. I recommend you to read some papers about globalization and services outsourcing. That may help you to better understand that value your services have and why somebody will consider fair to pay your price for them. Most valuable thing for you is an on site presence. Small offshore outsourcing teams just can't be on site with customer, so communication problems arise. To be honest, it is very hard to communicate with clients from Sillicon Valley from Russia, Moscow because of time zone differencies (11 hours). |

Mikkri, I'm not exactly sure what you are saying. You start by disagreeing with my description of cutrate outsourcing groups, then you seem to make a number of statements supporting my view. I don't need to "read some papers about globalization and services outsourcing"-- I know these things from firsthand experience. I don't mean to insult individual programmers from Russia, India, etc.,. Very many of them, if they came to the US and worked for software development companies, would be valuable additions to those companies. US companies charge enough to guarantee that everybody working on a project is a professional, and the managers of projects can communicate well enough to handle the inevitable "scope creep" of projects without destroying the relationship with the client.

Right. But most of them may be valuable abroad too. |

Brikface, as I can see you didn't undertant what we are. At fist, we don't want to leave our countries, we don't want to hear "Russia, Ukraine, India, etc.,." And second, in my city, Kharkov, placed more than 40 universities and colleges and my coders have great experience and skills since I can carefully select them. I'm the master in physic of solid state matter, but I begun to learn C at 12. 10$/hr allows me to pay my guys normal salary and rent our office with PC's. I don't see any reason to continue this discussion.
Best regards |

Leaving many other questions aside, I think you should consider paying your programmers more. As you well know, when Russian workers get mad they don't fool around.
