How do I create, edit, delete users from the ADS with code???

I am doing this programming project for my studies. It involves creating an alternate interface to the MMC(Microsoft Management Console) to creat and modify OU's(orginisational Units) , users, etc in the ADS(Active Directory Structure). Quite honostly, I don't know where to begin. Found the Active Directory Cookbook, looks like a good reference,but I don't want to buy something if I don't need to.

Any help would be appreciated.
