You don't need a fax machine to get faxes. Get a fax-to-email fax number from CallWave. Try it free.

PHP/MYSQL IM System help
I need someone to help me design an instant messenger for my site. I want the client to be php and to connect to a mysql database. I need one that will alow me to use the database, table, and field names that I want to use. It needs to be easily configurable to the point where I can just plug in my host, database username, database user password, database tables, and field. I need one that can be easily integrated into my current site. It does not need to have a separate login or database elements from that which is already setup on my site. I need something where someone can basically click on on a link "open instant messenger" and opens the IM without them having to put in a username or password.

I think I might have found someone who is trying to do the same with his site and is close to being succesful. I will have to look at his code later in the week to see if it is what I am looking for.
You all probably don't have the time or desire to register to any sites, but something like this site http://www.collegeclub.com is almost exactly what I want. |

I know there are two ways of doing this:client/database and peer-to-peer. Am I correct that a peer-to-peer client is something like the java versions of AOL and Yahoo Instant messengers. For peer-to-peer I would have to install some type of communication software like flash communication server, a jabber server, or hubz server software(these are the same people that make digichat)? Am I correct in the thinking that peer-to-peer requires server software? If so, am I also correct in thinking that the only way this is possible is 1.having a host that allows you to telnet and run your own apps(or your own server to run it on) or 2. finding a service like actually hosts them off thier own server something like http://www.hubz.com/buyItNow.html

Hi!
There are several ways to accomplish what you desire. In response to your questions: It would be very difficult to implement this system without running a server side software package. Therefore, if you are looking for the most economical way to implement such a system, I would advise that you consider running a server side package. I would be interested in discussing this project in detail with you if you are still in need of a developer. Please contact me at info@sheddtech.com and include information concerning the required timeframe and budget so that I can correctly address your needs. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Robert Shedd info@sheddtech.com |

A better solution
A cleaner and more efficient method for the chat that you desire is IRC. At URL we currently use a php-driven client. It requires very little requirement on the client side. All you need on the server side is access to a SQL database. If you for some reason do not wish to use that we also have a Java Client. If your interested, please email me at URL

PnuMatics, before you start spamming can you at least look at the thread date... the last reply before yours was December 23rd, 2002!

I did not realize my thread was this long ago, but I think I have a solution. I'm going to use a jabber server with a php client. I'm researching it on two sites.
http://forum.glue.g-blog.net/ http://webmessenger.sourceforge.net/forums/ But I will check out what you said anyway. Sorry for responding to spamming you guys. |

Well I still plan to check out your chat. I'm still playing around with jabber. Maybe we can discuss your chat room and how it works sometime
