Do you mean there is a firewall is between Python and messenger? Then the answer is no, not if the firewall is any good.

If Python and MSN are on the same side of the firewall then you probably can using COM/DCOM (I presume there is a COM interface to messenger, but I have not checked). However if the firewall is blocking messenger then controlling it from Python will not change that.

If by "behind a firwall" you mean there is a row of trees between Python and messenger, then you will have to wait for Python 3.0 with the proposed lumberjack module.

configure the firewall to not block messenger.

How you do this depends on the firewall.

This is not really a Python question. I suggest you post to the system admin/Antivirus Protection forum asking how to configure it.
