Setuptools on 64 bit windows system

Hi All,

Im trying to get python installed and working on my windows 64 bit system. I found the website and installed version 2.7. FOr the project i am doing i need to be able to use the package geopy which is used for geo coding addresses to map co-ordinates

In order to get geopy to work i need to install setuptools 0.6c11

The installer for it doesn't work with 64 bit systems so i followed the instructions to copy the code for it into the folder C:\Python27\Tools\Scripts and named it setuptools.py

I then opened IDLE and tried to run it but it failed with the message

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Python27\Tools\Scripts\setuptools.py", line 242, in <module>
main(sys.argv[1:])
File "C:\Python27\Tools\Scripts\setuptools.py", line 182, in main
if setuptools.__version__ == '0.0.1':
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute '__version__'
Can anyone help me. This setup is becoming a tad frustrating
I tried to provide links but because im a new member wasn't allowed

If you require any other information please let me know

Thanks for your time

Install linux, discard windows. Assuming ubuntu linux distrubution, follow the instructions at
http://code.google.com/p/geopy/wiki/Installation
Code tags
are essential for python code and Makefiles!

I have toyed with the idea of Unix in the past for university work but i don't really want to end up fighting the system as opposed to the problem we are trying to solve

And to be honest it looks no more difficult with windows than Unix (The link you supplied was the original instructions i was using...they are available in the comments section) and our IT department in work wont allow us to switch due to draconian policies

Hi

For those interested i managed to get this working in the end

I downloaded the script called ez_setup and saved it to the directory where my scripts were stored (You can probably google this as im still too new to post links)

Then i ran it in the command prompt

C:\Python27\Tools\Scripts>C:\Python27\Tools\Scripts\ez_setup.py
It installed without any problems (The initial problem seems to have stemmed from the fact i renamed the ez_setup.py to setup.py)

I then loaded geopy by running the command below

C:\Python27\Scripts>easy_install geopy
Thats it

Thanks
