Python interaction with a Gui Program

I need to write a script to get python to interact with a preexisting gui program. I am trying to get it to send commands like open this file, pull the text from the screen etc. Is this possible, if so can you point me in the right direction. Thanks

What sort of a GUI program? Is this on Windows, Linux, Mac OSX?

If it is a Windows program you want to control then take a look at WATSUP. This is aimed at controlling programs for testing, but could be used for other purposes.
