Is Cron/Rake My Best Option?

I have created a RoR Lifestream web app called iStalkr ((URL address blocked: See forum rules)) and I am currently trying to find the best solution for importing the activities from the feeds into the DB.

We are currently running a cron that calls a rake to import items into the feed. Is there anything you would recommend doing different? Is there a better way do this?
