Clan server software... Looking for ideas.

Ok so recently I got into playing planetside. Its alot of fun. Being a java developer my outfit has asked me to develope a website for recruting.

I decided I wanted to try to use php for the site mainly because I don't know it that well and would like to be more proficient in it.

I was thinking of a basic news index page with a forum. If they want some eye candy they will need someone to do images and/or flash because I don't know that stuff either.

I know mysql and apache to a decent degree I'm just looking for some open source software that will layout the site for me so that I can create the customizations. (layout = directories and file infastructure.)

I downloaded PHPBB2 and have started looking at it but I have a few questions.

Is this the right software to use or is there better "stuff" out there?
