.ece extension

i noticed that on the www.independent.co.uk website the extensions of the pages end in .ece why is this?

It looks like some type of file extension for some scripting language or something of the sort. Maybe it's used by macromedia or something like that. I couldn't find much on it in a google search.

It could be something to do with WebCT or something like that, where people have developed their own script language that runs on their servers. I think that's how WebCT started anyway.

Either way, it's an extension for some reason and may only be specific to a few sites.

what is .ece

Web page dynamically generated by an Oracle Express application server; typically contains server-side code that is parsed by the Web server, which generates HTML for the Web page; may connect to an Express Database to retrieve content for the Web page.

The ECE file extension is also used by news articles from the independent.co.uk website.
