Intermediate code help

I am writing a scripting engine which will allow users to define grammer, and parser files with that grammar. I am writing it in java. I have written class files which will create a token stream, and assign values to each token. I have read articles on scripting engines and compilers, but none of them fully explain the concepts of intermediate code and/or virutal machines.

What is intermediate code???
