Moved to Scripts
Read through the Script Resources thread at the top of this board for several suggestions.

phpBB is good if you want to install something that is poorly programmed and full of security holes
![]() This thread highlights the issues with phpBB quite well and has a few suggestions about other forums to use. The main two mentioned are Invisionboard and vBulletin. |

I'm in total agreement w/ a.koepke here. IPB is the board to use if you are running on a very small budget; if you have the ~$150 for it, vB is definitely worth every penny. |

vBulletin is not free though.
Reading BugTraQ, IPB and vBulletin seem to be equal regarding security. And the possibilty to use it for free even for commercial projects, is a major advantage IMO. www.invisionboard.com (Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated to them. Just a fan of good pieces of software...) ...M [edit] oops, a few minutes late... ![]()

I have experience from bulletin board software. Here are some that may be of use to you.
Free: SMF - http://www.simplemachines.org/ Nice interface although the forum layout is not so good. It looks messy. phpBB - http://www.phpbb.com/ Almost no customization possible apart from some fun modifications. Low security and easily cracked. yaBB - http://www.yabbforum.com/ Extensive Admin Control Panel with loads of options; blocking proxies. Direct access to the CSS and the HTML Templates. MyBB - http://www.mybboard.com/ I do not have any experience from them. Not free (but worth checking) IPB - http://www.invisionboard.com/ Really great. You can restore the skin and the Templates row by row if you mess up. Has the possibilty for nice skins and modifications. vB - http://www.vbulletin.com/ The most expensive and best on the market. Has more modifications, skins and security of all bulletin boards out there. If you want to have an IPB board but cannot afford it, you can always try a free host. Although it isn't the newest version (2.1.6) you can have v 1.3 for free (but hosted by them ). One such example is http://forumer.com. I have had experience with them and they are pretty good. The offer some 300 modifications and ~100 skins for a forum hosted by them. If there is anything you wonder, do not hesitate to ask! ![]() - Moridin Last edited by Moridin : June 15th, 2006 at 05:45 PM. Reason: made links into hyperlinks |

I would go along and recommend phpBB or MercuryBoard.
For the longest time I used phpBB for its ease of use and the TONS of add-ons, although recently I have found MercuryBoard to be even simpler and a better layout. You can demo my board @: http://forum.ecsportal.com MercuryBoard Site: Here I would give it a HUGE recommendation for ease of use and layout! The administration panel is a dream. |
