Sites knowing your physical location?

Sometimes, I'll see a website with an advertisement or whatever, and they are able to tell where I am located geographically (Like, for me, they are able to tell that I am localted in the Las Vegas area)

I would clear all cookies, everything, and they are able to still tell me. I never give them any information.

How are sites able to do this?

Ip ranges are assigned and people make databases of these assignments to sell on. Once you go to a site they can see ur ip, if they have paid they can link your ip to a demographic area (though its not perfect, some of the time they get it wrong too, though most people see relavancy). This is how they "appear" to magically know where you come from.

Note: there is free (but limited) versions of these databases available but they are even more, un-reliable.

Hope this helps.
