Greetings,
What is considered the 0ptimum amount of Characters in the Title of your document. Should "meta name="description" content" Basically mirror your title? What is best advised for: "meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT" ? Thanks as Always, Jack |

Keep your title short and concise. Accurately describe the topic on the page. If you want a number then keep it under 65 characters (that seems to be the general consensus).
Meta Keywords is a useless tag. Fill it with misspellings and commonly used words on the page. The Meta Description tag won't help your ranking but may be shown in the search engine results if a better snippet cannot be found from Dmoz or on your page. Fill this with a good description of the page's content. Stuffing this with keywords will work against you as this is for human consumption. Not the search engines. |

In response to the last post, I would just like to emphasise the fact that the meta-description data is appealing to the user. You will want to include the keyword once/twice so that it gets put in bold by the SEs. This will attract the searchers' attention and increase the likelihood of your page being clicked through to. This is all the more important when your page isn't reaching the top 3-4 position in search engine result pages (SERPs).

Users never see meta keywords. They are hidden in the source code and not displayed on the page. They are never displayed by the search engines or by web browsers. |

I've corrected the post.

I don't think it's wise to fill with misspellings, specially if those misspellings are not found in the page. |

There's no harm in stiffing that meta tag as it is ignored by the major search engines. It doesn't help or hurt you.

54 Character Title Tag is Erroneous Assumption
I visited the podcast link below. It recommends 54 characters. That is not the optimal length for a title tag. I have written an analysis of web page title tags for SEO and usability and recommend a two-part title tag. Since I cannot post urls here, you'll just have to search for Web Page Title Tags on Google and click on the top match.
See the section entitled "Web Page Title Tag Limits." Quote:
