I think that the tools found at http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/ are great and allows you to track the progress of backlinks listed in google as well as rank in google for certain keywords...not only for your URL but your competitors.

It's an application, and when I got it they were offering s free version, with some features restricted until you register and pay..but for the most part the free version is pretty good!
