To get yourself started have a look at the competition's website - see what keywords they are using and how they have these keywords displayed on the page - then get yourself some one-way inbound links with the keywords in the anchor text. Oh and read about SEO until your eyes bleed! |

That will do absolutely nothing for you. And I mean absolutely nothing. The meta keyword tag is completely ignored by Google and MSN and no search engine uses it for rankings any more. Anchor text is the visible hyperlinked text on the page. For example, let's examine this code: <a href="http://www.domain.com/">Webmaster Forums</a> The anchor text for this link is "Webmaster Forums". This is important in search engine rankings because the search engines use anchor text to help determine the relevance of a page being linked to for those keywords. By having this link pointing to their forum's web page, Webmaster Forums will perform better in searches for the phrase "webmaster forums" (and other similar phrases as well). To add further if you have that inbound link (i.e. Webmaster Forums) in your title or content in the page that the link is pointing too then this will help reinforce the keyword phrase with the SE's for that page.
Point-of-note: It has been tested that you do not need the keyword to be present anywhere in the code for the page to rank for a keyword-rich inbound link - although you may need more links or links from quality pages to achieve a good ranking with a competitive keyword. Also there are other Search Engines that still use the keyword tag: AltaVista is one if memory serves ne well - it may be old but its still got a following and it can still bring traffic but that being said it is still a drop in Google's ocean. Adding Keywords to your content and getting inbound links is a step in the right direction just by doing this will increase your site in the rankings (if done properly). SEO is part of Search Engine Marketing so if your company is serious then they may need to set aside a budget to generate traffic to your site - you can look into getting yourself listed with Google Adwords (the sponsored listings that appear in the Search Result Pages) this will drive traffic at-a-cost to your site while you wait for your SEO to kick-in. If it all seems a bit daunting to you then tell them to seek out a proper SEO/SEM Agency. Last edited by pws1970 : May 3rd, 2007 at 06:41 AM. |

pws1970 is correct...the SE game is a deep, deep, dark enigma.
You can't really just ask 'how is it done'...it takes tons of research, trial-and-error, and most of all, time. The best thing you can do at this point, is build a quality website with original, keyword-rich (but not too rich...there are articles on this) content. Building inbound links is the next step. I disagree with the statement about meta tags....thousands of smaller search engines still use them...best to take the 10 minutes and add them in. Check out seochat for articles and tools to help you along the way. You've got your work cut out for you!

Example: If you are trying to rank highly for "pink popcorn" and you have a website called "Pete's pink popcorn" - get links saying "Pete's pink popcorn", "pink popcorn", "buy pink popcorn", "awesome pink popcorn", "tasty popcorn", "Pete's pink products", etc etc... These will all help your rankings for your target term (and each word, and related terms... "popcorn products" for example). So - if you are submitting your site to lots of directories, make sure you use your keywords in the "title" of your link each time. Note: It's very important that you vary the text (ie: do NOT ask everyone to link using the exact same phrase), "unnatural linking patterns" raise red flags and can bring unwanted scrutiny from Google. |

First of all read some tutorials about SEO and try something up to date since SEs change algos. Then keep in mind that for some keywords it's like impossible to get on top. |
