If you have "web design" website, and you are submitting to your business niche directories it will surely help you.

Some sample ( dummy) directories could be as given below :-

webmastersdirectory ( a sample directory for webmaster resources)
seodirectoryonline ( a sample directory for seo resources)

It will surely help you score higher rankings on search engines. However you need to make sure that those directories have good page rank.

links from directories might help... but generally they won't help you a great deal.

for one thing, you'll get next to no traffic from these listings.

as for building links for purposes of pagerank... it's probably of some help to get a link in a directory with high page rank. but directory submissions alone aren't going to get you a significant raise in your SERP rankings.

In my opinion, I'd rather spend my time creating great content for my site than spending hours submitting my site to directories. If you get links on pages where traffic will actually come in (say, the homepage of another site...) that's time better spent.

Mine site is not an educational one. Its related to web development and web designing. So can you suggest some of the directories where i can submit my web site free of cost. So that i can have quality links.

Thanks in advance.

You can find a list of free directories at Directory Critic. Just keep in mind that directory links are low quality links. Not high quality links.

I feel that google/yahoo gives slight preference to .edu domains just like .com ranks above sub-domains.

Both of those are myths and completely untrue. I would like for you to show evidence of both of your claims. "I feel" just doesn't cut it in SEO.

You're not going to find quality links there or from just about any directory. You can count the number of quality directories on one hand, may be two. Directory links are a slow methodical way to build up low quality, but still helpful, links for your web pages. They are a long term solution.

Directories don't have PR. Their individual webpages do. The homepage of that directory may be a PR of 3 or 4 (which is not considered to be high and does not make the directory high quality) but the page your link is on does not have a PR of 3 or 4. It's probably a 1. And you get to share that PR of 1 with every other link on that page.

Plus quality goes way beyond PR.

You can't just go out and get quality links. They come to you. Websites that rank well in your niche control the quality links and only give them to pages they consider to be worthy of them. If you want them you need to offer great content to entice them to link to you.

primarily, as an SEO, directory submissions have pros and cons about it... well backlinks and traffic is actually it's main purpose.. but if i will do it, i put much more weight in other optimization. i suggest dont put too much weight in this optimization process... just remember to pick the best categories where you will put your site on it..
