Are directories necessary for SEO?

I have not had the time to submit my sites manually to directories, and have been getting decent links elsewhere. I am wondering if links from directories will give my serps a noticeable increase.

They won't give it a noticeable increase for any competitive search term. They can help with longtail and uncompetitive keywords if done over a long enough period of time.

There's lots of low cost directory submission services out there if you don't have the time to do it yourself.

I think its worth if you do manual submission to some of established directories that have been around a while.

I don't provide it if that's what you mean, although I have used a few.

It depends on what page rank this directory, or even the page with your listing, have. The more page rank of that page, the better for your site.

That's probably because they are being filtered out as duplicate content. Article directories are dead for SEO and dying in general as well.

Web Directories and search engines go hand in hand. Search Engines prefer directories rather then a single page doing all the pulling from other files.

Put some quality content on your website that will make webmasters want to link to you. Directory submissions, article submissions, link exchanges are all just worthless weak links. If you want good rankings you need quality links. You get those quality links with quality content.

If you receive back links from relevant segments on those directories, then it will surely help you increasing your search engine rankings.

Directories tend not to provide great links, but it all depends on the worth of the directory. It has been my experience the .edu domains carry some weight. And great content will drive the need for others to link to you.
