Blogging - where to begin

Want to start a Blog. I can easily put it on my site, but is it perhaps easier to get traffic other ways?
  • I want to be able to move the blog later (And take traffic with me)
  • The traffic is not initially for money. I need feedback from people etc -and also to get some measure of how much I can make later

Thanks
Olav

Just having a blog will not get you traffic. You have to blog regularly and make good posts in order to get attention and build a following.

If you are prepared to do that I recommend using Wordpress as it is by far the best blogging software available. It also is easy to install and ready to go very quickly.

Have a look at Blogger or Wordpress. Also have a look at these tips.

Hope this helps.

Yea, wordpress is the best, a big plus; it's ready to embrace search engines.

I was more thinking of services like blogger.com or typepad.com vs putting it on my own site. Ie if using this kind of services can give me more readers.

Thanks
Olav

Using a hosted service doesn't offer any benefits as far getting you more readers. You can only do that by doing what I mentioned above. The only benefits of using a hosted solution is you don't need your own hosting, domain, or worry about updates to the software.

However paid hosting gives you an opportunity to use dedicated IP, which decreases your chances of hosting your site on the banned IP or the one with bad reputation for Google.

For initial stage I don't see any problem for taking both service from one providers eg. wordpress.com

By hosted service I mean using a blog hosting service.

And Google doesn't use IP for bad reputation. That's a common myth. IPs are shared and thousands of sites can be on one IP address. Even if 100 of those sites are a bad neighborhood the other sites on that IP won't be affected. You aren't considered part of a bad neighborhood unless you participate in it. IP address is not a factor.

Typepad is a paid service, I also heard currently it is banned in UAE.
