When a page of your website is being opened with multiple URL’s so it would be considered a canonical issue and Google rates it like Duplication.

Canonical links are also known as preferred links. Canonicalization is the process of picking the best URL when there are several choices.Content duplication is one of the most common issues(or challenges) webmasters and site owners must face.

If the website is been opened with different URL, then this is known as canonical issue and the Google find this confusing due to redirection and rate this as duplication.

It’s the number of URLs of a website indexed by a search engine. This is what I pick from
    http://www.searchengineoptimizationjournal.com/2009/04/24/search-engine-saturation/:

“Let’s say you have a website with 100 pages. If 90 of those pages are indexed at Google, 75 are indexed at Yahoo!, 80 are indexed at MSN, and 65 at Ask.com, you’d say that your search engine saturation is a sum of those, that’s 310.”

    Canonical Issue

Canonical issue like your website open with non www and www and /index.html but all have same content, so you should use 301 redirect other pages to www(.)domain(.)com

If Google discovers your webpages via multiple URLs, it is going to declare them as duplicate. Hence, you need to tell Google about your preferred URL by adding rel=”canonical to your preferred version:

In short, Canonical issues mean diverse urls serve the same content. When search engine finds that diverse urls are serving the same content for the same page then it will select the best version of the url from it and ignore others which will badly impact the SERPs of the website/webpage because search engine treated these types of urls as duplicate content. Hence it is good practice to specify canonical url for all pages.

This type of issues especially happens in the ecommerce websites. To avoid this issue, we should have to specify the preferred page/url as canonical within rel attribute hence search engine will ignore the diverse urls which are referring preferred page/url.

Refer this resource link support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en to solve canonical issue and learn how to specify url as canonical.

In simple words, canonical issue arises when different version of URL can access the same content within a website. For example if the homepage is accessed by different version of the following URLs, then it would be canonical issue.
    http://www.yourdomain.com
    https://www.yourdomain.com
    http://yourdomain.com
    http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html
    http://www.yourdomain.com/home.asp

Additionally, with and without [/] at the end of URL is also different versions.

Canonical issues is the situation when any websites is accessible through different URLs. If this situation happens with any website then search engine considers various URLs to duplicate each other and it may effect the ranking of site. To overcome from this situation it is required to redirect the different version of URLs to one only. This redirection by .htaccess file or server side redirection.
