Exclamation Directory

Is it worth adding "PHP Link Directory" to my site to help increase the traffic and site rank?

ask yourself this question:

"Do I ever visit a website to look at their link directory?"

There's your answer. You'll get 0 visitors as a result of this.

In my opinion, these are a humongous waste of your time. You *might* get a handful of inbound links, but most of these will be garbage in the eyes of the SERPs.

You're better off spending your time doing SEO, writing some Press Releases, writing a blog, or participating in *relevant* social networks to boost your traffic.

ditto

most free directorys are a waste of time

not sure whether most paid directorys are any different although I hear Yahoos is quite decent, and then your being linked to by them.

I agree, but every little bit helps I guess. There are still some very old websites with decent page ranks that will give good backlinks. New directories and niche directories are great too because you never know how it will fair over time.

Manual directories are worth it - at least in making sure your site gets indexed regularly. php style link swaps are useless though. They will be almost entirely ingnored by search engines.

I agree, most directories are useless, spend your time writing articles to submit to sites.

I agree with that, though I have submitted my site to various directory sites, but I have to agree, I just wasted my time.

Only 2~4 directory sites are useful.
