Talking Do reciprocal links need to relate to your site?

Hi me again,

I have a quick question about reciprocal links...

I have noticed that a lot of people have signatures which link to there website (makes sense). But what if my website has nothng to do with web design and is about sport?

Will that link still increase my link popularity even though it is based on a non sport website?

Not that it is something that I am planning to do but what is stopping me from registering on countless forum and including my signature in each post, leading to an increase in incoming links?

As of today theme of the site linking to yours is not important. A link is a link.

Some theorize that may change in the future, but as of today the theme of the site with the link pointing to your site means nothing.

Do you have evidence of this? I have seen nothing that proves a themed link is given any more "value" than an unthemed link.
