i will put here my experience in these field

i will begin with best 5 Ways for me

Links are the backbone of traffic. The more links you have to your site, the higher
your traffic level. Google's PR system is largest based on how many sites linking to
you, so more links, higher PR. You can monitor your backlinks and PR weekly
from here adminstool.com/search-engines/backlink-checker.html

To get more links to your site:
1-Write great content with daily update (be patient).
2-Adwords (it gives great traffic --adwords.google.com
3-Make site map it's very important for SEO.
4-Add your site to directories like dmoz and yahoo (you can search for best directories
in google search).
5-Work social networking sites (like Digg).--digg.com

7- Make sure links are natural/organic (not paid links as major search engines frown upon this)
8- Make sure content/links/etc are relevant to website.
9- No Black hat techniques (ie: hidden text/links/etc)

10 - use mod_rewrite rules for long / complex dynamic urls
11 - use the thesaurus method while writing content

Create new content regularly!

A method that I find works well is submitting pages to digg. This gets your webpage indexed by the major SE companies lighteningly quick.
(I have had it where my page has been indexed within 10mins)

It maybe that a more popular site has similar content but yours is presented in a better way. Therefore taking your competitions customers.

i only scanned so might have missed it but i beleive we missed out:
12: Make urls SEO friendly. Try not to use query strings to call pages. if needs be use mod re-write to change main.php?page=32&id=20 to main.php/32/20 (or in my case just /32/20 hehe)

Yeah this is a good point I dont believe its on our list of simple things to do.

Friendly URL's arent that important to search engines themselves but more to users search terms in search engines.
