Advertise with Google would be a first good start.

nah don't need to xP i started my forums with what 5 ppl (all friends) i did some advertiseing in some stuff (little) stuff.. now i have what 55+ and i get new users every day.. idk where they come from but they do xP..

First get ur friends to register (so u have atleast some members.. ppl probally won't join a 1 member forum)

Submit to ALL search engines..

Good Link exchanges (if u really wanted to do this) just search google and get the top couple.. (i have 3 but they link to my site so it's different)

Put a LINK WHERE EVER u go.. like for MOSTLY ALL forums i go to.. i link the 5 things i wanted ppl to see.. + i add my banner under them like so

Quote:
Website :: Forums :: Store :: Myspace :: Myspace Group

[BANNER]

If you can mention it a lot to ppl and so on..

Make sure u have good content + style.. ppl like to see very well put together sites/forums.. and if u have some good template + looks like alot + good content then they probally would register..

Make it so they can see (maybe even read) some topics + posts.. though for the most part register.. so give them a taste of what ur site + forums has.. then lure them in for the catch xP

idk this seems like the only things i could think of atm if i find anymore and u still need help ill re-post or edit this

IMO initially word of mouth attracts a lot of people. If you have few but active members like 4-5 your own people that will give you an excellent start. Directory submissions, forum postings and blog comments with relevancy will help you to generate more members for your forum.
Don't forget social networking sites as well like netscape and stumbleupon are good to generate high traffic in short span.
I have a account on both of them by the name defuse3388, you can add me as your friend.

WebKing agrees: There are many other networking sites, where you can tag your site, helpful to generate backlinks as
well as trafic.

Also through referral program you can get more members, you need to motivate your existing members through reward/gift to refer others also go on viral marketing, digg important posts of your forum thread in social networking sites.

1) Put the 5 or 10 latest posts on your site home page. That will show people what is going on in your community and hopefully invite them in. It also helps to keep your homepage fresh.

2) Participate at other similar forums and put a link to your forum in your signature. Don't spam other forums! Participate naturally. You'll get traffic to your site from targeted visitors this way.

3) Have conversations with yourself. Dead forums aren't very exciting. Register a few usernames and have conversations with your self as each member. That will help to get your forum started and make it look active.

4) Run contests. People love to win stuff.

Google AdWords is a very good begin to advertise your forum.
